Obama Care is the health care plan for America. The official name for “ObamaCare” is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The goal of Obama Care is to give more Americans access to quality public and private health insurance through consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, insurance exchanges, and other reforms.

Federal law mandates that all Americans must obtain health insurance by 2018. Obama Care creates a state specific health insurance marketplace where individuals and families can shop for subsidized health insurance based on income. It is important to note that if you have coverage through your employer, you can not get subsidies in the marketplace.

Obama Care open enrollment ends on December 15, 2017, if health insurance is not obtained by January 1, 2018, there will be a 2.5% household income penalty for going without insurance coverage.
